Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy has shown to be an effective treatment for trauma-related disorders. Dozens of independent studies have concluded that EMDR therapy is an effective way to treat the symptoms of traumatic stress such as anxiety and depression. While recalling traumatic experiences a therapist will direct the movements of a patient's eyes using a finger or a Light Bar. The idea is that by constantly focusing your visual attention on something else while recalling traumatic experiences, the strength of the psychological response to those traumatic events is weakened.
Somatic experiencing - or somatic therapy - is an approach to treating trauma-related disorders by focusing on the mind-body connection. While traditional talk therapy focuses on conversation to treat trauma, somatic practitioners focus on the story of the body when working with their clients as a way to relieve both the psychological and physiological symptoms of traumatic stress. Somatic therapy incorporates techniques that allow a patient to understand their autonomic nervous system and how they experience trauma mentally and physically. Somatic practice has been reported to alleviate the symptoms associated with anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, grief, and stress.

Hypnotherapy is a well-known therapeutic practice that helps patients cope with stress, anxiety, trauma, depression, addiction, and even pain management. Hypnotherapy is administered by licensed professionals who help patients feel comfortable and relaxed through hypnosis. This is done to induce a receptive state of mind. Then your therapist will help you visualize and guide you to achieve your treatment goals. Contrary to what’s portrayed in movies, patients don’t lose control over their behaviour during hypnotherapy. Qualified hypnotherapists help improve the quality of life for their clients in a safe and healthy way. Shelley sits on the board of the Alberta Clinical Hypnosis Society.
Traditional Psychotherapy is what people usually imagine when they think of psychiatrists, psychologists or other mental health professionals. It's a general term used to describe different approaches to treating mental illness. You'll often hear words like "counselling" or "talk therapy" used to describe psychotherapy. It can be helpful in treating the most common mental health problems like anxiety disorder, PTSD, mood disorders like depression or bipolar disorder, addiction, and more.
